Introduction
Welcome to our family web page. My name is Jane. These POYSKY - PÖYSKÖ - MATTA - MÄÄTTÄ - KEATLEY - LAUGHLIN Web Pages are an on-going genealogical hobby by me, a descendent of these four families. What started as a retirement hobby has become an activity that promotes family gatherings, seeks obscure information, dictates vacation destinations, and delves into the history of the Western World.

My grandparents were Johan PÖYSKÖ (later known as John POYSKY) and Sophia Ulriika MÄÄTTÄ (MATTA), and Robert Garland KEATLEY and Luella LAUGHLIN . The following pages are an attempt to share a portion of their lives, and that of their ancestors with all who may find it of interest.

I have divided my genealogical research into two areas, my maternal and paternal ancestors. This site reviews those of my maternal ancestors, Johan PÖYSKÖ (Poysky) and Sophia Ulriika MÄÄTTÄ (Matta), who came from Finland. Our other website, Keatley and Laughlin Genealogy, will review the history of my paternal ancestors, most of whom arrived in the US from Ireland prior to the Revolutionary War. I expect it to be on the Internet in 2009. I have divided these pages to aid the web surfer looking for specific information on one branch of the family. Both sites will include search engines so you may seek specific individuals.

As I said, this website is dedicated to my maternal ancestors, which includes pages covering a history of Finland, my Finnish relatives in Finland, their emigration to the United States, and the activities of the family since their arrival in 1886. Once it is uploaded, there will be several points on this website where you may click a hyperlink to my paternal Keatley/Laughlin relatives if this is also of interest to you.

An overview of the use of mitodchondrial DNA mapping in genealogical research. By mapping my mtDNA I learned I am a member of the rare Haplogroup Z. This information has helped me further my research. This page will provide information on using the reader's DNA to trace their own family line, and details about Haplogroup Z.

A History of the Poyskys (Pöyskö) and Mattas (Määttä )
The Finnish Matta/Määttä family has been traced to the 1600s through the Lutheran Church records in Kuusumo, Finland. The Poysky/Pöyskö family records are more recent. The Pöyskös have been found in the Lutheran Oulu Rural Parish, Oulu, Finland. In this map the Finnish province name is followed by its Swedish name. Both Oulu and Kuusumo are in Oulu Province.

The first member of the maternal side of my family, my maternal grandfather, arrived in the United States in the 1880's. Like so many emigrant families, he later returned to his homeland for his spouse and child. The family settled in the 'Helsinki of the West', Astoria, Clatsop County, Oregon. More children were born, a boarding house for Finnish men was established, the Lutheran Church and social organizations were joined, and the importance of a complete education was impressed on the next generation.

A Brief History of the Keatleys and Laughlins
The KEATLEYS arrived in Virginia colony, probably from Ireland, prior to the Revolutionary War. They settled in what is now southeastern West Virginia. One hundred years later the first Keatley men ventured west, settling primarily in Washington State.

To review their history and experiences 'across the pond' and in North America, please visit our other website at Keatley and Laughlin Genealogy, which will be posted in 2009.

It is generally believed that our Protestant Laughlin ancestors originally dwelled in the Highlands of Scotland, and that during the Catholic reign of Mary, Queen of Scots, they removed themselves to Ireland. Queen Mary was an ardent Catholic and prosecution of the Protestant was encouraged.

The Laughlins settled in County Down, then moved to County Antrim in Ulster, Northern Ireland. Records are scant, but sufficient to give credence to this supposition.

John Laughlin arrived in America in the mid 1700's from Ireland. He followed the customary Scotch Irish route of passing through Philadelphia, to central Pennsylvania, and then began the journey down the Appalachian trails. The family moved frequently in those early years.

Many Keatley family members continue to live within the originally settled area, now Mercer, Summers and Monroe Counties, West Virginia. Members from all of these Keatley families can be found in the records of the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World Wars I and II, and the Korean War. Family members married into locally established West Virginia clans and appear in several area Family Histories.

The hyperlink next to the names of most individuals will take you to their branch of the family tree. At the bottom of each page you will find a search engine for this site so you can seek a specific name, place, or event.

A site map will also be produced for each search. For example, if you use the search engine to find the Finnish city of Oulu, the search engine will list each page on which that name can be found. By clicking on the words "Site Map" at the top of that list you will see a layout of this web site, graphically demonstrating where each of the pages mentioning Oulu fit into the overall web site.
